Substitute Dante who came on for the injured David Luiz started off the scoring for the hosts with a simple tap in from a set piece on the stroke of half time.
Italy were able to equalise after the half but Brazil struck back with goals from Neymar and Fred. Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini gave the European side some hope as they pulled back a goal but the match was all over in the 89th minute when Fred scored again.
Italy will progress but will most likely face Spain in the semi-finals whilst Brazil will come up against Uruguay if they manage to beat Tahiti tomorrow evening.
