Benfica had most of the play during the first half but they were unable to capitalize on the situation with both sides going into the half time break without scoring.
At the start of the second half, Oscar Cardozo put his side in front but it was ruled offside. Chelsea then hit the lead with a goal from Fernando Torres who dribble past a defender and around the keeper to slot home a goal.
Benfica were able to the challenge with Cardozo leveling the score from the spot after Cesar Azpilicueta handled the ball in the penalty area.
Chelsea had the last laugh in the last minute of added time with Branislav Ivanovic heading in to the top corner with keeper not moving.
