Aston Villa opened the scoring early to the surprise of some with Chelsea dominating possession early. It was Christian Benteke who gave the home side the lead when he slotted home a goal into the bottom corner beating the Chelsea keeper.
Chelsea's luck got worse just before the break when Ramires was given a second yellow card for a high foot challenge and was subsequently sent off.
The second half was possibly a make or break situation with a loss meaning that Chelsea could be caught by Tottenham and Arsenal and a win all but assuring a top 4 finish.
Aston Villa evened out the playing field when Christian Benteke was sent off for a second bookable offence and a couple of minutes late, Frank Lampard equalized for the visitors.
Aston Villa's hopes of a late winner were dashed when Frank Lampard found a match-winner for the blues when he tapped in from all of three yards out and after a tense 9 minutes of added time, Chelsea held on for the 3 points to win.
