The Italian side opened the scoring in just the 7th minute with Lorenzo Insigne crafting a smart goal after fending off a defender.
The runners-up then found the back of the net for the second time mid way through the first half with Goran Pandev dribbling round the keeper and finishing calmly after Arsenal missed the chance to level with Pepe Reina saving a Podolski penalty.
Arsenal finally kicked into gear in the second half with Frenchman Olivier Giroud pegging back the advantage with a superb scorpian kick from a corner and then the Gunners leveled the scores with defender Laurent Koscielny heading home.
