Japan started off the match well with the Asian Champions getting in front through a Keisuke Honda penalty and then Manchester United star Shinji Kagawa doubled the advantage.

Italy pulled one back just before the break with Roma's Daniele De Rossi heading in truly.

Italy turned the tide of the game after the break as they leveled with an unfortunate own goal by right-back Atsudo Uchida and then took the lead with a penalty from Mario Balotelli.

Shinji Okazaki however made things interesting when he equalised with a goal but substitute Sebastian Giovinco would eventually score the winner for the European team.
